Through the Anti-Atlas all the way to the Atlantic coast

From the red three-thousanders of the Anti-Atlas, through the Aït Mansour oasis, all the way to the legendary Legzira Beach — every day brings a different landscape and a new adventure.

Our journey begins in the Souss–Massa region, the true breadbasket of Morocco, where on the very first day we start climbing towards the western ranges of the Anti-Atlas. These are extremely ancient mountains, dating back millions of years, yet still striking in their form — with peaks exceeding 3,000 meters above sea level. The slopes of the Anti-Atlas are famous for their centuries-old agadirs — traditional Berber granary fortresses. In fact, the name of the city of Agadir comes from these structures. Imagine monumental stone buildings standing guard over the ancient treasures of Berber tribes.

At night, we stay on a mountain pass in the very heart of the massif — a place where silence takes on a whole new meaning and the stars feel close enough to touch. From there, a long and rewarding descent takes us to Tafraout, the capital of the “wealthy Berbers,” nestled at the foot of the legendary red rocks of the Anti-Atlas. The town is known for its fragrant valleys of argan and almond trees, guinea fowl farming, and its famous craftsmanship — leather sandals made from goat and camel hide, considered among the best in Morocco.

From Tafraout, we head south towards the magical Painted Rocks — an extraordinary art installation from the 1980s that transformed an entire valley into a surreal landscape of pastel colours. Just nearby lie the vibrant Aït Mansour oases, among the most beautiful in southern Morocco. In this harsh desert-mountain environment, the oases are like green jewels — filled with palm trees, cool shade, and crystal-clear springs.

Along the way, we pass small Berber villages with traditional kasbahs — clay fortresses built in the same way for centuries. Riding through them by bike, you truly feel like a traveller from another era — close to nature, people, and history.

On the way to Tizint, we spend a night in the heart of a centuries-old olive grove, sleeping in a comfortable Berber tent under the shade of the trees.

To finish our journey, we reach some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Kingdom of Morocco, including the legendary Legzira Beach, famous for its monumental stone arches rising above the ocean.

Anti-Atlas to the Atlantic coast

Day 1

From the Souss–Massa valley to a 13th-century Anti-Atlas fortress (105 km, 1900 m)

The first 40 km offer a relaxed ride through the Souss–Massa valley — almost flat, surrounded by citrus plantations and fragrant gardens. It’s the perfect moment to find your rhythm and feel the openness of southern Morocco.

Gradually, the landscape begins to rise. Before lunch, we reach a traditional Agadir — a fortified stone granary, a testament to ancient Berber culture.

The second part of the day takes us through almond valleys and increasingly demanding climbs. A few of them will be challenging, especially the final ascent leading to the gates of a 13th-century fortress, where we will spend the night. Sunset over the stone walls makes every pedal stroke worth it.

Highlights: Aït Baha, traditional Agadir granary

Day 2

Across the heart of the Anti-Atlas, down to Tafraout (80 km, 1,700 m)

A true mountain stage — a royal day on the bike.

We start at around 1,200 m above sea level, but this is only the beginning of the climb. Ahead of us lie dozens of switchbacks, several mountain passes, and the raw, dramatic landscapes of the Anti-Atlas.

The reward is a spectacular descent into the “Happy Valley” of Tafraout, with views of the famous Lion’s Head rock — a natural sculpture that has become a symbol of the region.

Highlights: Iflou Ihedan canyon, Lion’s Head rock.

Day 3

From the Happy Valley, through the Blue Rocks to the Aït Mansour Oasis (95 km, 1,800 m)

We stay in Tafraout for two nights — today we ride a loop to the majestic canyon and the Aït Mansour oasis.

First, we cross the astonishing wind-sculpted formations of the Anti-Atlas and the famous artistic installation of the Blue Rocks. Their vivid colour contrasts sharply with the raw, desert-like granite landscape.

Then comes a solid, roughly 10-kilometre climb followed by a long descent towards the palm groves — a sudden explosion of greenery in the middle of the stone desert creates a truly striking impression.

After lunch, we return to Tafraout, where you can buy local products, Berber jewellery, and the iconic goat-leather slippers.

Highlights: Blue Rocks, Aït Mansour Oasis.

Day 4

Down to Tiznit (85 km, 950 m)

This is our final day in the Anti-Atlas. It’s worth stopping in one of the traditional duars — stone Berber settlements and fortress-like villages, so naturally integrated into the landscape that they seem to grow directly out of the rock.

From there, a long and epic descent takes us towards the Tiznit plain. The raw, semi-desert landscape gradually transforms where water appears — olives, oranges, and almonds grow in surprising abundance.

We will spend the night in an olive grove, tasting locally pressed olive oil — one of the finest you are likely to have experienced.

Highlights: centuries-old duars, epic descent, overnight stay in an oasis.

Day 5

Through Tiznit to Mirleft (60 km, 400 m)

The morning takes us across flat terrain to the regional capital, Tiznit. The city is surrounded by high walls, enclosing a lively medina filled with souks and artisan workshops.

One of the region’s specialties is traditional Berber silver jewellery.

After a short climb, the Atlantic begins to appear in the air. In the final kilometres, we ride along the ocean — with the wind at our backs, the sound of the waves, and the feeling of an approaching finale.

Highlights: Tiznit, Mirleft.

Day 6

To Legzira, along the coast and back through the hills (75 km, 1,300 m)

We stay in Mirleft for two nights, sleeping right by the ocean, whose rhythmic sound will accompany us until the end of the journey.

The final ride takes us to the legendary Legzira Beach. Beneath its monumental stone arches, we ride along the Atlantic shoreline — a moment that stays in memory long after the trip ends.

Highlights: Legzira Beach.
